Local money helping local womenTreatment is often expensive and long-term. Many times, a woman cannot work during her treatment and must rely of others for help with even the simplest of things. The Bluffton firefighters auxiliary started the Rockin' The Pink Breast Cancer walk in 2009. Since its inception, the walk has raised more than $60,000 for local organizations specializing in breast health. All profits of the walk stay local to help Lowcountry women with low-cost mammograms and those who have been diagnosed and are currently fighting breast cancer. Treatment is often expensive and long-term. Many times, a woman cannot work during her treatment and must rely of others for help with even the simplest of things. “We know that breast cancer is not just a woman’s disease,” said Lori Thompson, one of the walk's co-chairwomen. “It affects families, friends, co-workers, communities, and yes, even men.”
